About Newport

Newport is located on the Ohio River, approximately 45 miles north of Cincinnati. Newport was settled in 1795 and incorporated as Newport in 1810. It soon became a leading shipping port on the Ohio River for grain and other agricultural products from Kentucky's interior via the Licking River to Cincinnati, where it was shipped further eastward. The city has a strong tourism industry due to its location near several sports teams (the Northern Kentucky Tri-County Area) and venues such as Newport Aquarium which draw millions of visitors annually; it also serves as an important transportation hub for riverboats using the Licking River to travel upriver towards Cincinnati or downriver towards Lake Erie at Portsmouth/Newark, Ohio or Maysville/Paducah, KY respectively.[2] In 2007 CityRating named Newport "Best Overall Experience" among all cities over 50k population.
