About Georgetown

The city has a mayor-council form of government, with five council members and the mayor elected every four years. The current Mayor is Democrat Jim Newberry, who was elected in 2017. Georgetown's original name was "Lebanon", but it was soon renamed in honor of President George Washington (1732–1799). The town received its present name on January 30, 1790; however, when Kentucky became the 15th state in early 1792, Georgetown retained its name while the rest of the state took "Kentucky" as their official designation for that year only. In 1803 United States Secretary of War Henry Dearborn commissioned John Floyd to build a new fort on Cumberland River which would be called Fort Washington (now known as Fort Knox). Since then Georgetown has been an important military supply and transportation center due to its location along major river trade routes from Pittsburgh to New Orleans during pioneer days; later it served as an outpost for Union troops fighting against Confederate raiders during both Ulysses S. Grant's and William T.
