About Overland Park

The city was incorporated on June 9, 1959. The city is named after its founder, Frank D. Overland. Overland Park has a long history of human settlement dating back to the Ice Age hunter gatherers and their Pre-Columbian descendants in the area around what is now downtown Kansas City, Missouri near Brush Creek (see Paleoindians in Kansas). In 1803, at the confluence of Indian Trails Road and Blue River Road within today's southern limits of Overland Park (then part of unincorporated Wyandotte County), William McCoy built his cabin along Brush Creek; it would later be known as McCoy's Trading Post.
