About Baldwin City
Baldwin City has been named one of the 100 Best Small Art Towns in America. The area that is now Baldwin City was part of the Neosho River Valley, which had been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before European settlement. The first known inhabitants were Osage Indians who moved into the area from Missouri in 1828 and settled on a reservation along Spring Creek near its confluence with Shoal Creek (now called Shoal Creek Boulevard). They were removed to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River in 1835-1836 after their treaty with local settlers was broken.
