Monona was platted in 1855. It is named after Monona County, Wisconsin. A post office has been in operation at Monona since 1856. The town's water tower is shaped like a giant corn cob and painted to look like one as well; it stands tall and holds of water for the city's residents and businesses, including the local high school (Monroe-Dowd High School). The structure was built by Monroe resident Bob Roloff with help from his family over a period of two years starting in 1976 at an estimated cost of $9000 USD ($ today). In addition to being used for fire protection, it also serves as an emergency reservoir during floods or other emergencies that may require additional water storage capacity beyond what can be provided by private wells or public reservoirs such as Lake Red Rock near Pella Iowa .
