About Iowa City
Iowa City was founded in 1839 when the Wisconsin Territory was created. It became the county seat of Johnson County in 1843, and it grew quickly as a result of its location on several important railroad lines. This made Iowa City a major hub for both passenger and freight traffic; by 1850, over one half of all Midwest trains passed through Iowa City. In addition to long-distance railroads, local transportation included stagecoaches that traveled throughout the region from Boston to Missouri (and later Omaha). The city's first hospital opened in 1855 as Mercy Hospital; today it is known as UnityPoint Health – University Hill Campus or UIHC (formerly University Hospitals & Clinics).
