About Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is the second largest city in Black Hawk County and the 107th largest city in Iowa. Cedar Falls was founded on January 15, 1847 by Dr. William A. Mowry and other settlers from Warren County, New Jersey who were seeking a new location to build a mill after their original settlement along Mill Creek (now known as Cedar Valley) had been flooded out during an early spring thaw of that year.[6] The town site was originally platted by Daniel Cunningham on July 4, 1848.[7] It became incorporated as "Cedar City" on February 13, 1850[8][9] but changed its name to "Cedar Falls" before 1860,[10][11][12] reportedly because there were already too many cities named Cedar City elsewhere in Iowa.
