Mooresville is located at (35.865, -80.903). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.32%, is water. The Catawba River flows through Mooresville on its way to Lake Norman in northern Mecklenburg County; it runs along the southern edge of town and forms part of its border with Iredell County before turning northward toward Charlotte as Mountain Island Lake near Interstate 485/Uptown Charlotte's northwestern city limit line (at Exit 16). The lake was created by Duke Energy damming up two sections of river in 1963-64 for hydroelectric power generation purposes; it provides cooling water for Duke's nearby McGuire Nuclear Station on Mountain Island Road just south across Iredell county lines from Mooresville Piedmont Triad International Airport .
