About Richmond

Richmond is the center of a metropolitan area with an estimated 2016 population of 1,263,977. It is the third-largest in Virginia after Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. The Richmond Metropolitan Authority (RMA) oversees city services which include: police protection; corrections; planning and development review; water and sewer service delivery for both residents & businesses within City limits as well as portions of Henrico County not served by their own municipal system or Chesterfield County's system that are located inside RMA boundaries. The agency also provides funding to supplement local services in certain areas like parks maintenance, cultural activities & historic preservation programs through grants from federal sources such as HUD Community Development Block Grants (CDBG).
