Notre Dame, Indiana: History The University of Notre Dame is a Catholic university founded by the French priest, Fr. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., on November 26, 1842 in northern Indiana near the town of South Bend (then St. Joseph). The school was named after an early benefactor and founder of the Sisters of Charity; Saint Marguerite d'Youville (French: "Notre-Dame de la Victoire"), who was canonized as a saint in 1990 by Pope John Paul II and is known as "Our Lady Victory".
