Michigan City is located at (41.633, −86.067), about west of Chicago and east of South Bend, Indiana on U.S. Route 20 between the Indiana Toll Road and Interstate 80/Interstate 90 in the eastern part of the state known as Michiana or "Little Chicago". The city's elevation is above sea level; according to the 2010 census it had a total area of , including land that was once Lake Michigan before post-glacial rebound raised its shoreline by some . The city lies on an outwash plain among glacial moraines left behind by receding glaciers during recent ice ages, with no major river systems nearby other than small creeks such as Fall Creek which flow into Lake Michigan through marshy areas along its shores near downtown Michigan City after heavy rains or melting snow further inland in LaPorte County's rural landscape to its north and northeast beyond US 20/US 12 (the Borman Expressway).
