The city was founded in 1854 by George W. Streator, and named after him. It is the county seat of LaSalle County, although a small portion extends into neighboring Livingston County. The city is part of the Ottawa-Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area with a combined population of over 110,000 people (2005 estimate). In 1853 George W. Streator came to Illinois from New York state and purchased land for $1 per acre near what would become downtown Streator on which he built his home "Oak Lawn". He later purchased an additional . In April 1854 he platted Oak Lawn Addition to be sold at auction on May 1 that year; this became the original town site for what was then called "Streatorsburg".
