North Chicago is located at (42.3905, -87.8459). According to the 2010 census, North Chicago has a total area of , of which (or 99.4%) is land and (or 0.6%) is water. The city's northern border follows Lake Michigan; three small bayside lakes—Grosser, Middle and Little Lakes—are within the city limits as well as the channel between Lake Michigan and Little Lake that connects them all together; this body of water was once known as Mud Creek but now goes by several names including "Little Bay" or "The Cut".
