It is part of the Champaign–Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Homer was laid out in 1854, and named after Homer, New York. A post office has been in operation at Homer since 1855. The village was incorporated on April 6, 1890. Homer is located at (40.117551, -88.262285). It lies along Uptown Street between North Lincoln Avenue and North Duncan Road; it also extends southward to include portions of West Main Street and East Main Street as well as a small portion of South Duncan Road near its western end (the latter three streets are all part of IL 47). Downtown Champaign lies about to the west via either route 43 or Uptown St., while downtown Urbana lies about to the east via either route 43 or Uptown St..
