Evanston is also home to the main campus of North Shore University HealthSystem, a non-profit academic health care system. Evanston was founded by real estate speculators John Evans and James Hamilton in 1855 through the merger of two towns: Cottage Grove (formerly South Evanston) and Evansville (formerly North Evanston). The city became an industrial center because of its proximity to Chicago's steel mills, as well as being connected to numerous other businesses along nearby Lake Michigan. In addition, it has several railroad lines running through that carry freight traffic from the ports on Lake Michigan into Chicago's rail network.Evanston is located at 42°7′43″N 87°56′26″W / 42.12222°N 87.
