The Boise Public Library, which includes the Julia Davis Park branch, is downtown on Capitol Boulevard. The City of Boise owns and operates the historic Grove Hotel at 8th and Main Streets. It opened in 1911 as a Firehouse before becoming a hotel in 1936 after an architectural conversion by local architect John E. Tourtellotte; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1982 as Fire Station No. 1 when it served that purpose until 1978 when fire services moved to its current location at Fort Street and Grant Avenue (Ustick Road). Downtown Boise has several parks within walking distance from each other: Ann Morrison Park is located across from Julia Davis Park along 9th Street between Front St & Myrtle St; Lincoln Center Plaza is located west of Broadway Ave between State St & Capitol Blvd; Veterans Memorial Park sits east-southeast across Capitol Blvd from Lincoln Center Plaza near Idaho's state capitol building; Pioneer Cemetery sits north-northwest just off Front street behind Old Idaho Penitentiary near Broadway Ave.
