The name was changed to Kilauea-Kalapana in 1940 and back again in 1959.The community is part of the South Kauai District and includes two census designated places (CDPs) known as Kīlauea North Shore CDP (population 1,929) and Kīlauea South Shore CDP (population 2,055).As of 2010 Hawaii State Department Of Education reports that there are 3 schools with an enrollment for a total population 759 students: Ke Anuenue School serves grades Pre-K through 12; Ke Anuenua Elementary School serves grades Pre-K through 6; Pahoa High & Intermediate School also serves grade 9 though 12.
