Kihei is located at (20.857983, -156.483842).According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.5 square miles (17 km2), of which 5.6 square miles (15 km2) is land and 0.9 square mile (2 km²) or 13% is water.[citation needed]Kihei was first settled in 1878 by George Lycurgus who purchased 300 acres from King David Kalakaua for $10 an acre.[1] The name Kihei comes from a contraction of Kīhālai,[4][5][6] meaning "two seas" in reference to its location between Makena and Wailea on Maui's southern coast.[7]:p25 The population density was 3,078 people per square mile . There were 10,931 housing units at an average density of 1,339/sq mi .
