Valdosta is located in the southern part of Georgia, approximately south of Atlanta and due west of Jacksonville, Florida. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , with being land and (0.5%) water. The city's elevation above sea level ranges from on the river to on residential areas farther away from it. The lowest point in Valdosta is where an unnamed creek flows into the larger river near downtown; while at its highest point is where another unnamed creek flows out near Belmont Road just north-westwardly outside I-75 exit #240 interchange as it crosses over that highway bridge over that same aforementioned small stream which runs through a wooded ravine between two local neighborhoods named "Belmont" & "Sugar Hill".
