Macon is located in the center of Georgia, east of Atlanta and west of Augusta. The city is situated at the fall line (the point where a river becomes unnavigable) on the Ocmulgee River, near its confluence with the Oconee River. Macon lies on Lake Sinclair; constructed between 1837 and 1840 by damming up this section of the Ocmulgee River to provide power for cotton mills that once lined its banks.
