Calhoun was founded in 1856 as seat of the newly formed Gordon County. It was incorporated as a town in 1858 and as a city in 1906. The community is named after John C. Calhoun, an American statesman from South Carolina who served many years both before and after the Civil War on behalf of Southern interests, including slavery; he died just two days before Gordon County's creation (December 31, 1850). The Georgia General Assembly designated Calhoun "the Peach Capital of Georgia" due to its location along Interstate 75 between Atlanta and Chattanooga at mile marker 331 where peaches are sold by local farmers during peach season which typically runs from mid-May through early July each year.[3] In addition to being home to one of only three National Historic Landmark homes open for tours that belonged to Confederate President Jefferson Davis,[4] it is also home to several historic sites listed on the National Register such as Fort Mountain State Park[5][6] and Sweetwater Creek State Park.
