About Augusta

Augusta is located on the Fall Line that separates the Piedmont Plateau and the Atlantic Coastal Plain, which creates a number of interesting geological features. The area is known for its high quality limestone, which can be found in many of its buildings. Augusta's landscape contains beautiful rolling hills and numerous lakes and ponds; many are part of the Savannah River basin (see List). It also contains several areas with natural beauty including Augusta Rockshelter. Located east of downtown Augusta, this site has an abundance of natural beauty containing rocks dating back to Precambrian times when eastern Georgia was under water; it provides a glimpse into how life may have appeared at that time in what would become one day eastern Georgia.
