The population was 9,932 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area and home to many retirees from Canada and New York State as well as snowbirds from all over North America who come down in winter months for its warm climate. Port Richey has a council/manager form of government with five elected officials: mayor (elected citywide), vice mayor (chosen by council members) and three commissioners each representing one ward within the city limits. The current Mayor is Richard Rober who replaced former Mayor Dale Massad on January 1st 2014 after he resigned due to health reasons .
