About Palm Harbor

It is part of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Palm Harbor was founded in 1925 by real estate developer C. H. Phipps, who named it after his hometown of Palm Harbor, Florida in Pinellas County (now a city). The first residents were employees at the local phosphate plant operated by Mosaic Fertilizer Company and their families; they moved into prefabricated houses built for them on land leased from Mosaic and known as "Mosaic Heights." The community grew slowly until World War II when many young men left to serve their country; this allowed more people to move there due to an increased demand for housing development.[citation needed] In 1950, Palm Harbor had a population of 1,000.[3] By 1960 its population had grown tenfold since 1940,[4] reaching 10,000 residents.[5][6][7][8] It continued growing through 1970[9], 1980,[10], 1990[11], 2000[12].
