Naples is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States, with an estimated 2015 median household income of $119,824. It is home to Naples Municipal Airport (FAA LID: NAP), a regional commercial and general aviation airport that serves as one of Southwest Florida's major transportation hubs. The city also has a large financial sector with over 1,100 businesses; many are tied to tourism and boating activities. The area was long inhabited by indigenous peoples known as the Timucua or Calusa; they had named it "Punta Rassa". In 1566 Spanish explorers landed at Punta Rassa following Juan Ponce de León's first contact in Puerto Rico (1513). The name "Naples" was later derived from "Cañas Gordas", which means 'fat sticks' in Spanish because there were reportedly several native tribes living on them when Spaniards arrived during Hernando de Soto’s expedition on April 7th 1539.
