Miami Gardens was incorporated on May 13, 2003. The city's neighborhoods of Andover, Bunche Park, Carol City and Lake Lucerne were previously unincorporated areas within Miami-Dade County. In 2010 former Florida Governor Charlie Crist announced that he had chosen Miami Gardens as the site for a new state university campus to be built in partnership with Jackson Health System. This was the first higher education institution approved by the State of Florida since Crist took office in 2007 (the other being an extension campus for St Petersburg College). It is scheduled to open in 2014 with a freshman class of approximately 300 students; it will ultimately have capacity for 2200 students and faculty members once fully developed over time.
