Longboat Key is a barrier island that extends along the west coast of Florida from Anna Maria Island in Manatee County south to Venice Inlet in Sarasota County. It is approximately long and wide at its widest point, with an area of . The town limits extend only about one mile (1.6 km) northward from the Gulf-facing beaches, but include all land on Longboat Key as well as several small islands just offshore: Big Carlos Pass Keys, Little Carlos Pass Keys and Rabbit Key. The northern portion of Longboat Key consists mostly of residential neighborhoods built up on former dune fields; these areas are known collectively as North Beach or simply "the North End". Most commercial development occurs near the southern end around Turtle Beach Road (County Road 684), including shopping centers such as Sandpiper Plaza and Bayport Plaza anchored by Publix Super Markets stores.
