It lies on a peninsula between Jupiter Island and Hutchinson Island, which are connected by bridges over waterways that separate them from each other and from Hobe Sound proper (the waterway separating it from Jupiter Island being called "The Ditch"). The town's name comes from its location near the mouth of an inlet known as Hobe River or Hobes Creek; this inlet flows into Indian River Lagoon just south of town limits along A1A (Atlantic Avenue).
