It is part of the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach, FL metropolitan statistical area. The city was incorporated in 1957 and includes what was once called "the world's smallest beach". The name comes from its location along the Atlantic Ocean at Daytona Beach Shores. It is a popular tourist destination because it has many hotels, motels and restaurants right on the oceanfront with easy access to other nearby cities such as Daytona Beach, Ormond-by-the-Sea or New Smyrna. There are also several parks located throughout this small community including: Lighthouse Park (which houses a lighthouse), Riverwalk Park (which features an outdoor amphitheater) and Central Park which hosts various festivals throughout each year including their annual Fourth of July celebration that draws thousands of visitors from all over Volusia County for fireworks displays both on land as well as out in the water off shore by boat cruises provided by local businesses such as Captain Hooks Cruises & Events who have been hosting these events since 1986 .
