About Rehoboth Beach

The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers were English farmers who arrived in the early 18th century, after William Penn received a grant for land from King Charles I of England. They named it "Rehoboth" after one of their leaders, Rehoboth Yeardley (1651–1720). In 1742, a road was built to connect Lewes and Rehoboth with Philadelphia via tracks that ran on wooden rails; this became known as the Lewes and Rehoboth Railway. It operated until 1860 when it fell into disrepair following two fires that destroyed much of downtown Lewes and economic competition from other modes such as railroads which were faster than stagecoaches pulled by horses or mules along rutted dirt roads over hilly terrain. In 1871, Thomas Boude founded America's first seaside resort at Cape Henlopen City near Lewes where he built an elaborate Victorian mansion called Castle Solitude which still stands today overlooking Delaware Bay across from Ocean City Maryland .
