The town of Bethany Beach was incorporated in 1922. The first mayor, elected that year, was William H. Brown. Bethany Beach is located at (38.372639,-75.974131). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land with no water area within its borders; however it does have three small ponds and one small lake on its outskirts which are not considered part of the census tract but do belong to Bethany Beach proper: Lake Fenwick (also known as "Lake Fenwick Pond"), Little Lake Fenwick ("Little Lake") and Big Pond ("Big Pond"). As of the census of 2000, there were 1,049 people residing in 595 housing units within city limits; this number swells during summer months due to tourists visiting from nearby Maryland and Delaware as well as vacationers from New York City who own second homes here or rent houses for their vacations during July-August-September time period .
