The city is home to the Bridgeport Bluefish baseball team, which plays in the Atlantic League. The New York Mets have held spring training there from 1986 until 2013. Bridgeport was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,800 years before Europeans arrived. The name "Bridgeport" was derived from an 18th-century settler named Jonathan Trumbull who came from a town with a similar name in Connecticut (now part of Stratford). The first local people known to have settled in Bridgeport were the Pequots; they established a village now known as Old Saybrook about away and controlled land spanning between Long Island Sound and present day Milford just north of Bridgeport Harbor on what became known as Pequot Avenue (a major thoroughfare that still exists today).
