Seymour is home to the New Haven County Fairgrounds, where the annual Connecticut State Fair takes place. The town also hosts an annual Oktoberfest celebration in October. The first settlers of Seymour were primarily farmers and cattlemen who came from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Long Island in 1740. In 1806 a petition was sent to the General Assembly for incorporation as a town; this was granted on May 10, 1807 with Daniel Boardman as first Town Moderator (mayor).
