Castle Rock was founded in 1874 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, and most likely was named for the rock formation. The town of Castleton grew up around it. The gold rush ended soon after a silver boom began nearby in Leadville, and many miners moved there instead. Castle Rock became more quiet over time; however, several events have drawn attention to the area: The original inhabitants of the area were Native Americans who arrived approximately 8500 years ago (7000 BCE).
