The city and county of Broomfield were consolidated in 2001. The city of Broomfield has a mayor-council form of government, with a mayor elected for a four-year term. There are five council members, elected to represent specific districts within the city. The current Mayor is Pat Quinn; he was first elected in 2003 and reelected again in 2007, 2011 and 2015.[2] History [ edit ] Broomfield was founded as the town of Fletcher in 1891 along what is now Washington Avenue by William Nye "Pancake" Johnson,[3] who named it after his wife's maiden name.[4][5][6] In 1893 it became the seat for newly formed Jefferson County[7]:p27[8]:p1–2 (which had been split off from Adams County). It would later be known as "Smiley Town", due to the large number of smiley faces which residents carved into trees that lined their streets.
