When the Spanish first arrived in the 1770s at the Santa Clara Valley, it was heavily populated by Native Americans. In 1777, Mission Santa Clara was built by Ohlone who converted to Christianity. In 1842, Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas was granted to Francisco Estrada and his wife Inez Castro. Portions of the land given in this grant later developed into present-day cities (including Mountain View and Sunnyvale) and towns (including Los Altos). Two years later, in 1844, another land grant for Rancho Posolmi y Laguna de los Palos Colorados was made to a young man named Manuel Dominguez; he also received an additional four square leagues from Governor Pio Pico on February 3rd of that year as well as a smaller adjacent ranch known as "Rancho Yarborough". This has been translated as "Ranch of Posolmi and Lake of the Colors," or more commonly known today simply as "Posolmi." Sunnyvale is located at .
