It is about 1 hour driving distance from the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Redlands was founded in 1887, and incorporated in October 1905. Its government is council-manager form of government with five members (including mayor) elected at large for staggered four-year terms; one member elected to represent each of four wards (each ward elects two members). The Redlands Passenger Rail Project, a planned commuter rail service between San Bernardino and Redlands began construction during 2014.[8] In 2017 the project received $18 million from the California State Transportation Agency to build an underpass beneath Interstate 10.[9][10] The City's namesake comes from its first major industry: ranching. Historically it was known as "The Beef Capital" of California for being a major source of beef cattle that supplied meat markets on both coasts before refrigeration made it possible to ship fresh meat long distances by train or truck.
