The city is a member of the Association of California Cities. Oakdale was founded in 1850 by Dr. James Beckwourth, a trapper and trader with the Native American Indians in California and Nevada, who settled here after his marriage to Maria Poveka (Poway), daughter of Chief Sanpitch (Sánchez) from the Numa tribe at Lake Tahoe. In 1851 he built an adobe dwelling on what is now Beckwourth Avenue near Fifth Street; it still stands today as part of Oakdale's historical museum complex across from City Hall Park on South Washington Street between Second and Third Streets. His ranch became known as "Beckwourth's Rancho.
