The city was incorporated on May 1, 1989, and is the most populous municipality in Southwest Riverside County, and one of the Inland Empire's largest cities. Murrieta experienced a 133.7% population increase between 2000 and 2010 (from 77,000 to 161,348), making it one of the fastest-growing cities in California during that period.
