History In 1856, Francis "Don Benito" Wilson was granted Rancho Buri Buri by Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado; he leased it to his brother-in-law Elisha Smead for use as a sheep ranch. In 1865, Charles Lux and a business partner purchased 1,700 acres (6 km2) of Rancho Buri Buri land from Smead; they founded the town that would become known as Menlo Park where it adjoins Stanford University today.
