Loma Linda is home to Loma Linda University, with 7,489 students as of the fall 2013 semester. The city was incorporated in 1970 under the leadership of California State Assembly member Donald L. Grunsky (1925–2006), who also became its first mayor and remained so until his death on November 24, 2006.: 27 The present-day area encompassing Loma Linda was part of Rancho San Bernardino —a Spanish land grant dating back to 1810—owned by Juan Bautista Alvarado (1784–1851). It later became a Mexican land grant for Mission San Gabriel Arcángel before being purchased by Eulogio de Celis in 1844.: 28:29 In 1893 it was acquired by W. F. Holt and C.A.. Clark :30 who established an orange grove which they named "New Hope Orchards".
