It is located about 8 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The area was first settled by the Tongva (Gabrieleño) and Chumash Native American tribes hundreds of years ago. It would later become a part of the Rancho Tujunga Mexican land grant made to Fernando Tico in 1838, and he named it after his hometown in Verona, Italy. The city is home to the University of La Verne College which offers degrees in 40 majors within its undergraduate program; it also has graduate programs offering masters degrees in business administration and education as well as a law school with J.D., LLM, MCLI & Phd programs.. The university's School of Law is currently ranked #40 nationally by "US News & World Report".
