According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6 square miles (16 km2), all land with no water areas within city limits or unincorporated territory included in Imperial County's census totals for that county and not part of any incorporated place or CDP with its own USGS GNIS code.. The elevation is 105 feet above sea level at the eastern end of town where it meets State Route 86 which runs east-west through Imperial County connecting El Centro to Brawley and Interstate 8 which runs north-south from San Diego to Yuma Arizona on Mexico's border near Mexicali Baja California Norte state capital Tijuana .
