Gilroy also produces mushrooms in considerable quantity. Gilroy is also known as the "Heart of the Santa Clara Valley" due to its location near Silicon Valley, and has been home to many technology companies and start-ups, including: Hybride Technologies (acquired by Google), FireEye Inc., Brocade Communications Systems (acquired by Broadcom), Juniper Networks, Nvidia Corporation, NetApp and Borland Software Corporation. Gilroy's roots date back to Spanish colonization when José de Gálvez y Madrid established a cattle ranch there in 1776; he later added land grants for Rancho San Ysidro that included Gilroy. The town was outfitted with an agricultural depot for growing crops which was served by the railroad after it reached there in 1869 along with other towns further south such as Watsonville & Salinas .
