It has been the county seat of Fresno County since 1872. The city was incorporated in 1885, and it became an important agricultural center due to its location on the San Joaquin River and its proximity to railroads, earning it the nickname "The Valley of Heart's Delight". Fresno is a major transportation hub for visitors heading to Yosemite National Park (about 60 miles or 100 km east), Kings Canyon National Park (60 miles or 100 km southeast) and Sequoia National Park (75 miles or 120 km southeast). Visitors also often stop at Fresno's historic downtown area along with attractions in nearby towns such as Selma. A popular festival is held every year called "What 'Chu Lookin' At?", which celebrates Fresnan culture through art, music, food and entertainment. It attracts thousands of people each summer.
