Davis grew into a Southern Pacific Railroad depot built in 1868. It was then known as "Davisville", named after Jerome C. Davis, a prominent local farmer who owned the site where the depot was located. However, the post office at this location closed in 1902 and moved to nearby Woodland after an intense battle over naming the town between Davis and Woodland residents (Woodland eventually won). The community of Davisville became part of West Sacramento when it became an incorporated city in 1903; however, it remained unincorporated until becoming a charter city on July 5, 2008.
