Castroville is an unincorporated town and census-designated place (CDP) in Monterey County, California. At the time of the 2010 census the population was 6,481. Castroville is known for its artichoke crop and for the annual Castroville Artichoke Festival, leading to its nickname as the "Artichoke Center of the World".
The community's origins lie in Rancho Bolsa Nueva y Moro Cojo, a Mexican-era rancho granted to the Castro family of Californio rancheros. Following the American Conquest of California, Juan Bautista Castro founded Castroville in 1863.

 He had been a corporal in the Mexican army, and after his discharge he married Maria Louisa Castro. The family raised cattle and sheep on the rancho for many years.
Castroville is named for Juan Bautista Castro (1822–1907). He was born in Monterey to José Joaquín Castro (1789–1865) and María Antonia Lugo de Mármol (1795-c.
