Troy is a regional center of industry, education and healthcare. Troy is also home to the National Peanut Festival, which draws more than 100,000 people each year from across the nation. Troy was founded in 1822 as seat of Pike County by European Americans; it replaced La Grange as county seat after that town's residents voted to move closer to Cahaba River navigation for their livelihoods. The city was named after Troy Township in New York State where some early settlers originated (see below).
