Decatur is located south of the center of Morgan County at (34.639, -86.974). The city is situated on a series of hills alongside the Tennessee River, which runs from southwest to northeast through Decatur and separates it from Limestone County to its east. Wheeler Lake lies to the west and southeast; in addition, numerous smaller lakes are located within or adjacent to Decatur's boundaries: Jordan Lake (partly), Mill Creek Reservoir (partly), Sawnee Reservoir (in part), Town Creek Reservoirs No 1 & 2(in part) ,and others . The city has a total area of , including parts that have been annexed since 1960 as well as water surface areas associated with Jordan Lake and Wheeler reservoir. The highest point in Decatur is approximately above sea level near downtown's courthouse; however some residents live atop Lookout Mountain () just north-northwest along U.S Highway 31/431 where elevations reach over .
