To the east, is the long low island of Seil and then Kylerhea. To the west are Kerrera, Luing and Mull. The A828 road connects Oban to Dunstaffnage Castle to the north-east; while from south-west comes a more minor road connecting Oban with Salen on Mull. From Port Appin in Argyll, an old military road runs across country through Glen Kinglas to join this main route at Inverlair Lodge just outside town centre. Oban railway station serves as terminus for one branch of ScotRail's West Highland Line from Glasgow Queen Street via Crianlarich and Fort William (the other branch is served by trains running between Glasgow Central or Edinburgh Waverley/Glasgow Queen Street via Stirling).
